David is selected as king not because of his outward appearance. He was short and young compared to Saul who was a head taller than everyone else. As a prelude to David defeating towering Goliath are these words...
"But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart."
A king needed more than just an impressive height or stature. David, though small, would lift Israel to new heights. Is he the first underdog in the Bible?
