One of the famous quotes in the Bible is in Proverbs 14...
"Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people."
In contrast the trial, cross, and death of Jesus brings darkness to the nation. As an eerie darkness comes at time of Jesus' death...this prompted the centurion to say ..."Surely this man was the Son of God!" The darkness was perceived by him in a different way. Righteousness and light are related. The gospel of John will address this upfront in the prologue.
